Can Mindfulness Meditation really help me change my health?

In one word…. ‘Yes’.  Mindfulness Meditation is key to you living in the present, rather than the past or the future.  When you pay more attention to your thoughts, your environment and your behaviour, your life including your health will start to change, as your thoughts are creating you to feel emotions which then governs your actions and the results that you get.   By understanding how your thoughts are creating stress in your body and how to pace yourself, you can start to heal yourself naturally from the inside out.  Learning how to quieten your mind and to live life at a slower pace takes practise, but the more that you practise Mindfulness Meditation, you will see that you will experience less stress and will feel more relaxed and peaceful.  Additional benefits are experiencing less pain, reduced anxiety as well as weight loss and improved libido.

So what does Meditation really mean? Is it some weird and wonderful technique that has New Age connotations? No… Meditation is just about quietening your mind for 5 or more minutes and allowing it to be still. Depending on the type of meditation you do (there are more than 8 types), you can ask yourself a question or ask yourself ‘what do I need to learn?’ before you meditate, and your self awareness will become heightened and you will become naturally more self aware and in tune with yourself.  We live such busy and frantic lives and often we live in a ‘doing’ rather than a ‘being’ state.  With technology and so much more things which are automated these days, we can be bombarded with text messages, emails, twitter, facebook notifications, online messages and we are losing emotional connection with ourselves and those around us, which appears to be breeding mental health issues.  Mindfulness Meditation allows you to pay attention to the overwhelmed and stressful thoughts you might be having and teaches you to let them go.  Enjoying nature and being grateful for what you already have is all part of being Mindful.  Living life in a rush and thinking ‘I’ll be happy when…’ all contribute to the stress.  Living in a ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’ mode is the key.

Be Mindful and Meditate twice a day for 10 minutes at the start and end of your day. If I hear you say, ‘I don’t have time!’, you are the person who needs it most.  Time is a continuum and the more relaxed you are, the more you will have and appreciate.

The top book for Mindfulness Meditation is Mindfulness – A practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world by Mark Williams and Danny Penman.
